Pinterest: You are a Liar McLiarpants

Can we all stop pinning the banana and almond milk recipes?

It's not that I have anything against banana and almond milk.  They're both quite great.  But they're getting a little overused on Pinterest.
They've become the cool kids on the block, the high school football captain that gets invited to every party.

When you're the cool kid, people spread lies about you.

Have you seen the "recipe" that goes something like this:
Blend a banana, 1/2 cup almond milk and a tablespoon of cocoa powder.  Tastes JUST LIKE a frosty from Wendy's!*

How can you even say that with a straight face? Have you even HAD a frosty from Wendy's?  No.  The above may be delicious (you can decide on your own) but it won't taste like a frosty. It will taste like banana milk.

And then there's my personal favorite Pinterest lie about the cool kid banana.
Mash up a banana and freeze. Then eat. Tastes just like soft serve ice cream!

This one.  This one I fell for.  And guess what?  Mashed up frozen banana tastes exactly like MASHED UP FROZEN. BANANA.  Know what it doesn't taste like? Soft serve ice cream.

*not the exact recipe because a) there are 100 versions and b) they're lies. all lies.

Lesson of the day:

  1. This post cracked me up. And it gives me hope that I'm NOT missing out by not trying everything on Pinterest.

    1. There can be awesome stuff on there and then there are those posts where you scratch your head and start mumbling to yourself.

  2. Although I'm a Pinterest wh*re, I would agree that some of the Pins are absolute LIARS! In all fairness, we do use frozen bananas to make banana sorbet and that is what my kids get for ice cream. We add cocoa and call it banana split ice cream lol.
**There is no way you could ever call bananas, cocoa and almond milk a frosty.

    1. Banana sorbet, now there's honest advertising. But you are right, def not a frosty. I actually made a homemade frost recipe today (from a cookbook, not pinterest), it does taste like frosties....guess what's not in it....bananas and almond milk. :)

  3. Thank you for my first laugh of the day! I've seen some Pinterest fails that are great too! Sometimes I wish there was a fact check or something for those posts to go through before they end up on Pinterest =)

  4. Haha! Great post!! I like to get my food recipes from people or sites I trust, like Health Magazine, Pillsbury, AllYou, etc. I admit that I am addicted with Pintrest, but I (too) have seen some crazy, (what the..???) kind of things. Thanks for this.

    1. I've had tons of good luck using allrecipes.com
Pinterest---well some recipes have been legitimately good. And then there have been those banana/almond milk stinkers. Not to mention the red white and blue layered drink that I tried last year....... ;)

  5. LOL. Anything with banana in is going to taste like banana. Even if there was a banana frosty I wouldn't eat it. I don't like banana flavored stuff. When I first started reading your post I thought you were talking about everyone posting how to make almond milk. I have pinned that too. :-)

    1. I don't like banana flavored stuff either! Bananas, YES....flavored stuff, no.

I do like almond milk but have not tried doing it myself. Have you?

  8. LOL! Just because it's on the internet does NOT mean it's true!

And I've always been of the mindset: If I want a treat, then just give me the full calorie, chemical laden, artery clogging version. That's the whole point. ;)

    1. Yay, artery clogging chemicals!

Reminds me of when The Biggest Loser tried to convince everyone to chew a piece of Juicy Fruit gum when they wanted a sweet. Right, as if one stick of Juicy freaking Fruit gum will make me stop wanting the five Oreos in the pantry. Ha.

    1. I know! So many people were pinning it and acting like it worked. I was in a "let's eat healthier" phase and gave it a try.

You know, in the post, I said frozen mashed banana tastes exactly like frozen mashed banana. I'd like to retract that. It tastes like bitter disappointment.

  11. oh no, for reals, I've done this! I have a recipe that calls for only - and I'm not kidding - frozen cut up banana, peanut butter and cocoa, blended for a long while (I added a little milk to it too) and I am not lying when I say IT TASTES LIKE SOFT SERVE ICE CREAM! So much so my kiddo loves it. It really really does. I was shocked.

    1. I want to believe, I really do. The past banana recipe was just so traumatic I'm afraid it will be awhile before I can trust again. :)

  12. I've had way too many bad experiences with those so-called healthy recipes on Pinterest. I think the worst was one that was banana, oatmeal and cocoa powder. Was supposed to make breakfast bars. They were SO awful! No sugar, no fat equals yuck!
