Sewing Savings

Did you know that some sewing machines are $12,000?

Yeah, that was the face I made too.

There will be no $12,000 sewing machines in my future.

My old bicor from jr. high will have to do for now. my machine looks just like this although this picture is from a google images search.
I would however eventually like to get a new machine. For maybe the $200-300 price range.

Man, sewing can be expensive. Not only is there the new machine I'd like to get, but of course you need fabric.

Riley Blake has got to be one of my favorite designers. And Moda. And Heidi Grace.

I needed a separate place to save sewing money. If I stick it in my wallet we will spend it on something else.

We had eaten my version of chop suey a couple weeks ago. The crispy rice noodles from La Choy are the best! I couldn't bear to part with the can at the time, so I saved it. Why throw away a perfectly good can?

I cut some scrapbook paper down to size (the can is about 4.5 inches tall) and glued/taped it on. Used my fiskars scallop punch to make a tag and some blue cardstock stickers to spell out "sew." Added a strip of light blue paper for contrast, a white border around the "sew" tag, and a few white "*" stickers. Presto. A sewing savings can.
Total cost: $0. Plus I recycled something so....

Happy crafting!

PS-If you want to buy a can of the noodles just so you have a can to use, they are $1 at Walmart. And a great late-night crispy snack by themselves while you watch mindless shows on TLC.

  4. Adorable can! I have a fancy husqvarna that my mom got me for Christmas... only she kept borrowing it to make stuff for ME (I don't actually sew), so I finally just decided to let her permanently "borrow" it. HA! Following you... http://orangiesattic.blogspot.com/

  5. That's a great idea! You can get a great starter machine on Amazon for roughly $200. Not bad since it has free shipping. Look up the Janome Magnolia. My fabric obsession got a little out of hand so I had to open a shop. Haha. Way to go recycling!

  6. If you keep eating $1 noodles, you should have your money in no time.

  7. This is cute! I use my mother's sewing machine that I think she got from her mother! It's old, but it does the basic sewing I need. I think if I get into more complicated things in the future, I'll buy a new one. But like you, I definitely won't be spending $12,000! I don't know who could justify that expense, except maybe Martha Stewart, but she can afford it:)

  18. Love the can! Riley Blake and Heidi Grace are two of my faves too! Thanks so much for visiting my blog, too! Good luck in your savings! I seem to ONLY spend money in my wallet on fabric. Maybe I should make a can to save for other things (like mortgage, utilities, food and other non-essential items! LOL!)

  20. Thanks for the love everyone! I would have to use an empty trash can as a savings jar to get the $12,000 machine! ha.

  21. I felt like making the same face when I walked into a local sewing shop to look at machines, too. I've had my sewing machine for almost 20 years, and I thought it was expensive at $300. Needless to say, I'm keeping my trusty "old" sewing machine. I can put a lot of money into repairs before it would be worth my money to buy new.

You know what's hilarious? A lady who works as a cashier at Hancocks (they can't be paying THAT much) told me about her two - yes, two! - sewing machines that cost $8,000 and $5,000. Maybe her husband won the lottery?? :)

  22. This is a great idea! I cannot wait to make this:)

  23. Me too! I am saving for a new machine. I want one that I can quilt with. I have my eye on a Bernina, but it is a little bit more than $200!! Hubby let me have $200 to "prime the pump" so to speak, but I have a long way to go. So for now, I will use my 1980's Singer workhorse!

  24. I need to make one of these that says "Swing Set." Kind of lame, but you gotta do what you gotta do. ;)

Thank you so much for joining my Crafty Cutter party! Have fun finding some crafty inspiration, and I hope you'll visit me at Serenity Now again soon. :)

  25. Aw, cute can! I think I need one of those, too, just to support my fabric habit :) I had to get a new machine a few months ago, because my ancient one finally gave up. The new one is a very basic, inexpensive one. It works like a dream, and it's all I really need.
